Concrete Paving Slabs - How to Lay a Patio Part One

Concrete paving slabs/council slabs can be used to easily create pathways, patios and drives of all sizes. Concrete slabs are usually inexpensive, durable and offer a long lifespan, making them a popular landscaping material. There are several methods which can be used to lay concrete slabs, some being more popular than others. Some methods of laying flags may be easier than others depending on the size and shape of the area you are covering. There are also some methods which are commonly used by home DIY-ers that wouldn’t be recommended by professionals. In this series we will go through several commonly used methods for laying concrete paving slabs, staring with preparing the Sub Base.

Before you begin any groundwork you will first need to plan out the dimensions of your patio/path. To do this you will need to have a rough measurement of the area you will be covering and the dimensions of each individual concrete slab. We say rough measurement as often you may need to allow for a little more space than you first thought, depending on the sizes of slabs you will be using. You will then need to consider the two, and calculate how many flags you will need to cover the area to meet an exact measurement. If you are using concrete slabs in an assortment of sizes we recommend drawing a plan on paper before beginning the groundwork (you don’t any drawing skills to do this) a simple line drawing will do. Sketching your plan on paper will help you to visualise how the end product will look, as well as recognising any potential flaws in your plan.
