Cleaning Block Paving – How to Get Rid of Oil Stains

Block paving is a modern, functional and generally low maintenance landscaping solution. However, from time to time, your block paving may experience some staining. In this article we will show you how to remove oil stains from your block paving bricks using various methods.

Oil Stains

Oil stains are common on paved driveways and can look unsightly if left untreated. Thankfully, however they can usually be removed fairly easily using some simple techniques.

Dish Soap and Water

For most oil stains, a simple soap and water solution scrubbed on with a nylon-bristle brush is enough to remove it. For this method, all you need to do is mix a few drops of washing up liquid with lukewarm water and work it into the stain with the brush, rinsing with clean water and repeating if necessary.

WD-40

WD-40 is a multipurpose spray lubricant with hundreds of uses, and many swear by its ability to remove oil stains from pavers and concrete. Treating oil stains with WD-40 is very straightforward: simply spray the stain with a generous amount of the lubricant, leave for a couple of minutes and flush away with clean water.

Baking Soda

If you’re in search of a method which uses common household ingredients, then this one is for you!

To treat the stain using baking soda sprinkle directly onto the affected patch, slightly dampen using a spray bottle filled with water and work in the baking soda using a nylon bristle brush. Rinse away and repeat until the stain is no more!

Remember as you sprinkle and brush the baking soda, you may only be removing the top layer of oil/grease, which is why it may be necessary to repeat the process several times. If you notice the stain becoming lighter or smaller then it’s likely the method is working.

Oil & Grease Remover

Most DIY stores stock oil and stain removers which can be effective in removing the stains from your pavers. However, it pays to do your research when searching for a suitable remover as many can be too harsh on pavers and cause discolouration. Additionally, most of the methods we’ve listed above seem to be just as effective in removing oil stains as a shop-bought removal solution.

Preventing Stains

The best way to prevent block paving stains is to use a patio sealer. If you do spill oil on your driveway and have already laid down a sealer, the oil will be much easier to remove and less likely to cause a stubborn stain.
