There’s a chill in the air and the leaves are falling, but that’s no reason to neglect your garden! We think gardens should be celebrated and enjoyed in every season, not just summer! So let our five landscaping ideas inspire you to give your garden the love and attention it deserves.
Autum-ify your Flowers and plant Beds
Even If your flowers aren’t in bloom, there’s no reason your plant beds should go unnoticed. Celebrate the natural, seasonal changes of your plants and flowers by highlighting them. Add autumn blooms in pots next to your spring and summer flowers for an eye catching, colourful contrast. Pumpkins are also a great way to add an instant autumnal feel to your plant beds. Choose pumpkins in various colours, shapes and sizes and scatter around and in your plant beds to turn them into striking autumnal features!
Try an Up-cycling Project
There’s just something about the autumn season that marries so well with the rustic theme and an up-cycling project is the perfect way to celebrate that! There are so many ways to incorporate up-cycling into your garden, from simple plant pot makeovers to more elaborate projects but a popular favourite is the piece of furniture turned flower bed. If you have an old piece of furniture that you aren’t quite sure what to do with, adding it to your garden may be the answer. Seek Pinterest for endless inspiration and get creative! Sometimes all it takes is a lick of colourful paint and a trip to the local garden centre to turn something once useless into a beautiful garden feature.
Make Walkways More Inviting
If left unkempt garden walkways can look a little bit dull in autumn, but with a little bit of primping, you can transform yours into something magical! First things first, if your walkway is lacking in colour, then it’s time to add some! This doesn’t have to be in the form of flowers and plants however (although we would recommend adding some seasonal flowers) you can also add colour in the form of decorations, lighting and landscaping materials. As we mentioned earlier with the flower beds, pumpkins are an ideal way to autumn-ify any area of the garden, especially a walkway. Simply by lining the path with a few colourful gourds, you can take it from dull and boring to instantly interesting!
Another great way to add visual interest and colour is to incorporate decorative accents. Depending on your taste, you may want to either keep things simple by adding a few accents here and there or really go for it and create something more quirky. Whatever style you like though, the trick is to add elements of visual interest all along the walkway, rather than one specific feature that captures all the attention. Hide little decorations amongst your flower beds and borders and hang things from trees. By not making your decorative accents so obvious, your sense of curiosity will be awakened and the walkway will seem more magical than monotonous.
Lastly, to create an interesting walkway it will need to be lit properly, especially as evenings get darker. Don’t let your walkway be hidden after dark. Use soft, warm lighting to highlight it’s best features and create a charming, romantic atmosphere. String lights are typically what everyone thinks of when it comes to garden lighting, but you can also achieve the romantic look with torches, hanging lanterns, spotlights and so much more. For an even more seasonal look, choose coloured lighting in orange or red.
Create a Space for Relaxation
Yes, you can put the sun loungers in the garage, but don’t put the rest of the furniture away just yet. Instead, get a garden blanket box and fill it with cosy throws, cushions and pillows in autumnal colours. Don’t stop sitting outside just because the weather is cooler. Get wrapped up and enjoy a book and a glass of wine outdoors. Feel the crisp autumn air and the warm sun on your skin. On cooler evening, a fire pit is a great way to stay cosy and is perfect for roasting marshmallows. Keep your garden furniture clean with soap and water and make sure to store your cushions and blankets away at the end of each evening. Use candles and low level lighting to set a cosy, calm mood and enjoy.
Add an Arbour or Arch
An arbour is the perfect way to enjoy the autumn weather whilst staying comfortable and cosy. Arbours also make lovely ornamental features that can be admired from indoors once the weather becomes too cold or wet. Beautify your arbour even more with some climbing plants in lovely autumn colours. The Japanese maple or ‘acer palmatum’ is perfect for this time of year as it phases through gorgeous yellows, organs and reds. If you aren’t keen on the idea of a garden arbour then why not try adding an arch instead? Garden arches make excellent focal points and can be placed almost anywhere to create visual interest and dimension. Like arbours, arches look lovely when adorned with climbing plants, and if you really don’t feel like gardening, faux climbers can look just as good.
